ALTERED PICTURE FRAME tutorial by Kim

kim today with a small step by step of an altered picture frame. I found the frame at a dollar store and it was really in need of some mixed media love :)

Now nothing against babies and super congratzzzz to Shery :) But this frame seemed so fun to make-over.

I popped off the blue piece so I could gesso over the pieces individually.

I used a thick layer of gesso then another layer of tinting base along with some all surface white acrylic paint.

I left lots of strokes to build up texture.

I added some drywall tape and mesh as well as some masking tape in random places. Then, using a make up wedge sponge I stamped the colors onto the surface.

Now there is a big leap, sorry. I was not happy with the colors, so I was just adding and sponging more and ..yeah...forgot more photos.... :)

I used the Artsy Border Maker stamp set, ARTplorations Oh My Stars stencil and Old Rose Prints stencil. I applied modeling paste through the stencils.

Some of the drywall tape has the best small circles patterns so I used a piece as a stencil to add the white dots. I used Dylusions spray inks over the modeling paste before the paste dried.

I love these roses and the paste shows a lot of the texture underneath.

COLOURFUL GIFT BOX by Susanne

Hi everyone!

Susanne here...it's my turn today to inspire you with a mixed media project tutorial. I decided to make something autumnal. This is a little gift box which is cut with the Silhouette Cameo out of kraft cardstock and decorated with some Sizzix Flowers.

I started by putting some Gel Medium through stencils on top of the gift box. I used the "Leaf Prints" and "Botanical Lush" stencils. The Gel Medium must be dry before we go on to the next step.

Now it was time to add some color. I used the Gelatos (Grape, Tangerine, Buttercreme, Cinnamon and Green Tea). I applied the colors on top of the textured paper and blended it with my fingers. I use a baby wipe to get my fingers a little bit wet.

 

Let it dry, that does not take much time, before you put the box together. If you want to protect the colors you can use a fixative of course. By the way. My black working surface is a duration baking mat. It's a cheap version of the original craft mat and perfect to work on with glue, colors or the heat tool.

To embellish the box I used different die cuts (all dies are from Sizzix) which were cut out of a creme white cardstock. I colored them with Distress Inks and the Ink Blending Tool.

The lable on the front of the box is also a Sizzix die with embossing folder. I stamped a sentiment from the STAMPlorations "Fond Expressions 2" onto it.

I think this is a very easy project. You can do this technique with every gift box or on a card. It's simple and it looks so beautiful.

ALTERED HOME DECOR PIECE by Lee-Anne

Hello, everyone! A fun and easy tutorial from me (Lee-Anne) today.  I've had this piece in my stash for a while and wanted to alter it.

Step one:  coat the entire piece in black gesso and allow to dry

Step two:  Apply a mixture of heavy black gesso and soft bead gel through the Bloom Silhouettes stencil (top of the piece) and Old Rose Prints stencil over the plate that had the French wording.  By using the heavy mixture of the two mediums I managed to cover up the wording and change the texture.  Allow to dry overnight.

Step three:  Make up three different colors of "paint" using mica powders and soft gel medium and dry brush the stencilled areas to highlight them.  I also used my finger to add some highlights along the edges of the entire piece.

Other than the drying times, this is a really quick and easy project that allows you to alter pretty much anything.  Hope this inspires you to try something new!

Tanja here - today, I would like to share the step-by-step tutorial for this home decor piece with you:

• cover a #12 Manila Tag with gesso using a craft scraper

 

• apply Dina Wakley Heavy Body Acrylic Paints (Lemon, Magenta) mixed with Acrylic Glazing Liquid to your Gelli Plate using a brayer

 

• put the ARTplorations Happy Flowers stencil on top of the monoprint and apply texture paste through the openings with a palette knife

 

• cut the panel to size and color the texture paste with Kuretake Gansai Tambi watercolors

• ink up the edges with Distress Ink (Picked Raspberry) and Wendy Vecchi Archival Ink (Watering Can) 

 

• use the STAMPlorations Artsy Border Maker with Distress Ink (Rusty Hinge, Picked Raspberry)  and Wendy Vecchi Archival Ink (Watering Can)
• heat-emboss with clear embossing powder

 

• apply Distress Paint (Dried Marigold, Wild Honey, Mowed Lawn, Picked Raspberry) on a piece of corrugated cardstock and ink up the edges with Distress Ink (Picked Raspberry)
• mat the panel on this background
• color two Big Chat Stickers with Distress Ink (Spiced Marmelade, Picked Raspberry) 
• add little dots with Dina Wakley Heavy Body Acrylic Paint (Sterling) as final embellishments
